Which residence works for a long stay

To give you a realistic starting point, these are our current monthly rates in US dollars. They are "from" prices for a full calendar month; exact rates depend on the unit and the season, and high-season months (mid-December to April) sit at the upper end.

What a monthly rental includes — and what to ask

• Monthly rates are quoted per calendar month and are well below the equivalent nightly rate; see the starting prices above and ask us for an exact quote.

• Cleaning and linen changes are included on a weekly schedule; more frequent cleaning can be added.

• Wi-Fi is included. Electricity is the one cost that varies with air-conditioning use, so ask how it is handled for your stay before you book.

• A deposit is usually held for stays of a month or more and returned at check-out.

Staying longer than 30 days: the rules

Most visitors from North America and Europe enter the Dominican Republic as tourists for 30 days. Staying longer is common and legal: an overstay fee is paid at the airport when you leave, on a scale that rises with the length of your stay. Internet, SIM cards and working remotely

Fibre internet is available in Sosúa. If your work depends on a stable connection, tell us and we will confirm the speed for your unit before you book. A local SIM card from Claro or Altice costs a few dollars and gives you mobile data across the coast; passport required. Power cuts are rarer than they used to be and usually short; ask us how back-up power works in your building if it matters for your work.

Everyday life

Supermarkets, pharmacies, banks and a clinic are all in the centre of Sosúa; larger hospitals are in Puerto Plata, 25 minutes away. The gym at Rizz Suites is open around the clock. Cabarete is 15 minutes by car for surfing, kitesurfing and a change of scene, and the beaches along the coast fill the weekends.
