When to Visit Sosúa: Weather, Seasons and the Best Time to Book

Guests ask us this more than any other question, and the honest answer is that there is no bad month in Sosúa — just different ones. The north coast has warm sea and warm air all year; what changes is the humidity, the chance of a shower, the crowds and the prices. Here is how the year actually feels, so you can pick the weeks that suit you.

The short version

December to April is dry, sunny and busy. May to July is hotter and quieter with the odd afternoon shower. August to November is hurricane season on paper, with the wettest weeks usually in October and November — and the lowest prices of the year.

December to April: high season

Daytime temperatures sit around 27 to 30 °C, evenings are pleasant and rain is rare and short. The trade winds keep the air moving, which is why Cabarete's kitesurfers fill the beaches from January. This is when North Americans and Europeans escape their winter, so book early — Christmas, New Year and February to March are our fullest weeks at Rizz Suites and Casa Linda.

May to July: warm and quiet

The heat and humidity rise a little, the sea is at its calmest and the beaches are noticeably emptier. Showers come as short, heavy bursts in the afternoon and clear quickly. For guests who want the pool to themselves and restaurant tables without waiting, this is a very good time, and rates are lower than in winter.

August to November: hurricane season, honestly

The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June to November, with the highest activity from August to October. The north coast has historically been hit less often than the east of the island, but storms and tropical downpours do happen, and October and November are usually the rainiest weeks of the year. Most days are still warm and sunny between showers. If you travel in these months, take travel insurance that covers weather, keep an eye on the forecast the week before you fly, and know that our team is on site to help if plans change.

Whale season: January to March

Humpback whales gather in Samaná Bay from mid-January to late March. It is a long day trip from Sosúa — around two and a half to three hours each way — but for many guests it is the highlight of a winter visit. If whales are on your list, aim for February.

The sea, all year

Water temperature stays between roughly 26 and 29 °C throughout the year. Sosúa's bay is sheltered, so even in the windier winter months the swimming in town is calm; the open beaches to the east see bigger waves in winter.

Prices and availability

Our rates follow the seasons: highest from mid-December to early April, lowest from September to early November, and in between for the rest of the year. • Best value with good weather: May, June and early July.

• Quietest beaches: late April, May, September.
